So here I am sitting in my air conditioned office in the bright sunshine with our internal lights flashing at me thinking about my obscene paper usage. Perhaps the latter adjective is is a little harsh but I'm staring at six or seven visible pile of A4 printed sheets, magazines, books, brochures etc on my desk. Not forgetting the mess of wood-based products strewn on the floor which has yet to make it to the recycle bin.
It's clearly something myself and other office workers need to spend some time cogitating on. Not just for the environmental impact on my part but for goodwill amongst fellow workers who seem to object to the bombshell that is my desk. I've been making some steps, such as printing on both sides and two pages on each side, but like most sustainable steps there are further, and more maker, ones to take.
My paper usage was put under some spotlight by a PR for an eco-housing scheme called The Lakes by Yoo. She sent me some info on the scheme yesterday with an attached PDF. One's clear knee-jerk reaction was to immediately print off the document off but the team added a neat twist - they have locked off the print button. You have to contact them directly to get receive it in hard form. I'm sure the amount of paper saved by doing this is considerable. And it makes you think about how necessary the printing process is. You always say you need to see print on page but is this really the case?
