Two industry associations add their complaints about the Government's draft sustainable construction strategy on the Electrical & Mechanical Contractor website yesterday. The Heating and Ventilating Contractors Assoctiation (HVCA) and the Electrical Contractors Assocation (ECA) issued a joint statement criticising the BERR for failing to include either carrots or sticks in the strategy and also slammed them for a lack of regulatory enforcement, mentioning Part L by name.
David Pollock, Group Chief Executive at the ECA, said: "We feel the strategy does not give the impression that a major step change, notably on reducing carbon emissions, is going to be pushed through by Government."
The world has turned topsy turvy! First the CBI asks for more taxes and now construction folks are seeking tougher regulation! Is this a heartfelt desire to send a message to the Government before it's too late or an attempt to shift the blame from the doers to the legislators?
Whatever, the Government would prove itself spectacularly incompetent if it wasted this extraordinary chance to work in harmony with industry. Perhaps new spinmeister Stephen Carter can save the day.
