Michael - this is a welcomed inititaive that should be communicated wider.
We need to move more sustainability approaches, products and research into the 'public domain' through creative commons and open source approaches.
As to design and architecture - there is a growing and thriving movement on second life (wikitecture and autodesk for example)and at openarchitecture.net where sustainability designs that work are openly shared through a design community.
Creative Commons is the way to go - I register many of my management approaches and tools with creative commons - allowing people to use them openly to improve, requiring acknowledgment but restricting commercial use.
