Excellent thread of comments that developed earlier this week on the Building website. Readers were reacting to plans for a new 'eco-village' (when will we all get sick of using the eco-tag?) in Kensington. Brian Stores kicked the whole thing off by questioning just what the benefits of demolishing existing buildings in the first place to create new 'sustainable communities'. Will the project "actually save energy or will it just look good under a green banner" was his point. Then the irrepressible Matthew (commenter-in-chief on this site) stuck his oar in.
Money should be spent on "regenerating poor areas - e.g. Streatham, where people get shot regularly - not fancy pants little towns built in rich areas for posh kids to feel good about themselves!" was his view. It's clearly an interesting question, but this is probably where the grubby world of developing and profits come into play. Creating a sustainable, eco-village in Streatham is laudable, but I'm guessing the margins are probably not quite as high as doing it in Kensington.
Agree re: eco-town in St. Reatham; all I'm asking for is a 'sustainable' butchers of fishmongerie, or a corner shop whose owners are not frightened 24/7!
