The new chief executive of sustainable group the UK Green Building Council has hit the ground running. Since starting in the Spring Paul King appears to have a set a clear strategy for the group, which he sets out in his latest interview in this month's Building Services Journal. I also witnessed him in action last night at the launch of a new sustainability report by Lend Lease, a UKBGC member.
The event doubled up as one to drum up new support, and members, for the UKGBC and King took full advantage of this. "This is not a fad, not a passing fashion," he began before strongly arguing for industry to lead change, rather than expecting politicians to take the lead. "Politicians want to hug you and agree with you more violently the last party you met," he noted, describing his time at the recent Party conferences as a "strange experience". "They (politicians) are following, not leading," he said. He then ran through what the UKGBC was focusing on, which includes future policy and legislation, illegal timber and a "campaign for real data". There seemed some confidence from those industry figures in the room that these bold changes could be made.
