Policy watch

Yes there are reports, target and action plans on all things sustainable coming out of our ears. Here's an attempt to pull of the most significant together:

  • Call for new environmental contract - This is a recommendation in a report by the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution on the urban environment. The commission is "astonished" that the UK does not have an over-arching urban environment policy. The new contract would set high level urban environmental targets for central Government to set and for local authorities to act on. There's another report on the area put together by the Urban Research Program on urban environments and health.
  • Voluntary code for firms - The Trade Associations Forum, which covers 500,000 companies, has launched a voluntary Climate Change Declaration for its members.
  • Large-scale zero carbon housing developments - Housing minister Yvette Cooper wants to encourage new schemes of between 5,000 and 10,000 homes. In a written statement she adds that the DCLG has called up Professor David Lock, chair of the TCPA, to advise them on the criteria needed for such schemes.
  • Another target to be missed - This time it's the Government's one to generate 10% of UK's electricity from renewable sources by 2010 according to a report from Cambridge Econometrics.
